Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a deep cleaning procedure designed to treat gum disease and prevent it from progressing. This non-surgical treatment targets plaque and tartar buildup beneath the gumline and smooths the tooth roots to help gums reattach to the teeth. At Hayes Barton Dentistry, Dr. Hunt uses advanced tools and techniques to provide comfortable, effective SRP treatment, restoring the health of your gums and preventing further damage.

What to Expect During Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is typically completed in one or more visits, depending on the severity of the gum disease. Dr. Hunt may administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

  1. Scaling: Using specialized tools, plaque, and tartar are carefully removed from below the gumline, including in deep pockets where bacteria thrive.
  2. Root Planing: The surfaces of the tooth roots are smoothed to discourage future plaque buildup and to promote gum healing.

After the procedure, you may experience mild tenderness or sensitivity, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Dr. Hunt will provide guidance on post-treatment care and tips to maintain your gum health.
